The Pursuit Of Happiness

Almost everyone has heard the hit single “Don't Worry, Be Happy” by Bobby McFerrin. The song has a very catchy way of conveying its simple message.

Being happy, resilient, and optimistic is good for your health. Being happy actually insulates your body from the stress of life. Doctors link stress to heart disease, cancer, and stroke.

The only thing in life that will always remain the same is change. In life, you have the power to make the necessary changes if you want to. Even in an unbearable situation, you can always find solace in the knowledge that it will pass.

Social networks or relationships are essential to happiness. Happy people are tolerant and respectful of others. They avoid clashes, arguments, and let go of all kinds of resentments.

To be happy is relatively easy. You just have to decide to become a happy person. You can do this by several ways:

  • Be grateful

We have so much to be thankful for in life. You can thank the taxi driver for bringing you home safely, the cook for a wonderful dinner, and the person who cleans your windows. Also, thank the mail carrier for bringing your mails, the police officer for making your place safe, and thank God for being alive!

News is stressful. Get less of it. Some people just cannot start their day without their daily dose of news. Try to think about it, 99% of the news you hear or read is bad news. Starting the day with bad news is not a sensible thing to do.

  • Manage your time

Time is valuable and too important to waste. Time management involves scheduling, setting goals, planning, creating lists of things to do, and prioritizing.

Understand these basic concepts of time management to become more efficient in personal time management. Fine tune your skills to be able to go for the results you desire.

  • Laugh everyday

Have you heard a good joke lately? Share a joke with your friends or family. As they say -'Laughter is the best medicine'.

  • Express your positive feelings and affection to people around you

They will most likely reciprocate your actions. Try not to keep pent up anger or frustrations; this is bad for your health. Instead, find ways of expressing these in a way that will not hurt or harm anyone.

  • Celebrate your accomplishments

Completing a task brings tremendous personal satisfaction. A sense of accomplishment boosts self-esteem, which in turn, results to happiness.

  • Learn something new everyday

Learning is a joyful exercise. It allows you to expand and broaden your horizons. Run, jog, walk, and do other things that your body is made for. Feel alive!

  • Avoid exposure to negative elements like loud noises, toxins, and hazardous places.

These are just some of the simple things you can do everyday to be happy.

Always remember the quote from Abraham Lincoln, "Most people are about as happy as they make up their minds to be."
